I am a nuclear medicine specialist and always trying to implement innovative diagnostic and therapeutic methods in imaging. My main research interests involve infectious and inflammatory diseases, tumor-immunology, and development of new-targeted diagnostic tools for PET imaging. The latter focus is carried out in close collaboration with our radiochemists. Within the lymphoma research Groningen team we have a close collaboration with the department of hematology. The research is focused on finding new methods for diagnosis and therapy evaluation in several types of lymphomas. We have a special interest in post-transplant lymphatic disorders (PTLD). Furthermore, we are developing and evaluating several fields of radionuclide therapy, so called theranostics.

Intraplaque angiogenesis is associated with the occurrence of atherosclerotic plaque rupture. Cardiovascular molecular imaging can be used for the detection of rupture-prone plaques. Imaging with radiolabeled bevacizumab, a monoclonal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-A, can depict VEGF levels corresponding to the angiogenic status in tumors. We determined the feasibility of Zr-89-bevacizumab imaging for the detection of VEGF in carotid endarterectomy (CEA) specimens. Five CEA specimens were coincubated with Zr-89-bevacizumab and aspecific In-111-labeled IgG to determine the specificity of bevacizumab accumulation. In 11 CEA specimens, Zr-89-bevacizumab micro-positron emission tomography...

Unexpected symptoms after rhTSH administration due to occult thyroid carcinoma metastasis
F-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography ((18)FDG-PET) scintigraphy is a useful imaging technique in the evaluation of metastasised thyroid carcinoma. Administration of recombinant human thyrotropin (rhTSH, Thyrogen (R)) increases the diagnostic yield of this procedure. Here we present a 64-year-old male who was followed for Hurthle cell carcinoma of the thyroid with several intrapulmonary metastases. He developed sudden complaints of neck pain following rhTSH administration as part of the routine preparation for a diagnostic (18)FDG-PET/CT procedure. This investigation subsequently revealed a previously undetected metastatic lesion in the first cervical vertebra,...

C-11-methionine (MET) is the most popular amino acid tracer used in PET imaging of brain tumours. Because of its characteristics, MET PET provides a high detection rate of brain tumours and good lesion delineation. This review focuses on the role of MET PET in imaging cerebral gliomas. The Introduction provides a clinical overview of what is important in primary brain tumours, recurrent brain tumours and brain metastases. The indications for radiotherapy and the results and problems arising after chemoradiotherapy in relation to imaging (pseudoprogression or radionecrosis) are discussed....
