My research in the Pathology department is mainly focused on immunological aspects of B-cell lymphoma. I study interactions of tumor cells with the microenvironment, and signaling pathways in Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphomas.

Lymphadenopathy driven by TCR-Vγ8Vδ1 T-cell expansion in FAS-related autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome
Published in: Blood
FAS-dependent apoptosis in Vδ1 T cells makes the latter possible culprits for the lymphadenopathy observed in patients with FAS mutations.Rapamycin and methylprednisolone resistance should prompt clinicians to look for Vδ1 T cell proliferation in ALPS-FAS patients.

miR-24-3p Is Overexpressed in Hodgkin Lymphoma and Protects Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg Cells from Apoptosis
Published in: The American Journal of Pathology
miRNAs play important roles in biological processes, such as proliferation, metabolism, differentiation, and apoptosis, whereas altered expression levels contribute to diseases, such as cancers. We identified miRNAs with aberrant expression in Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) and investigated their role in pathogenesis. Small RNA sequencing revealed 84 significantly differentially expressed miRNAs in HL cell lines as compared to germinal center B cells. Three up-regulated miRNAs-miR-23a-3p, miR-24-3p, and miR-27a-3p-were derived from one primary miRNA transcript. Loss-of-function analyses for these miRNAs and their seed family members resulted in decreased growth on miR-24-3p...

HLA expression and HLA type associations in relation to EBV status in Hispanic Hodgkin lymphoma patients
Published in: PLoS ONE
A proportion of classical Hodgkin lymphomas harbor the Epstein Barr virus (EBV). We previously demonstrated that associations between Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) alleles and susceptibility to EBV+ classical Hodgkin lymphoma differ between European and Chinese populations. Data on Hispanic populations is missing. Here we examined the association between HLA type, tumor cell HLA expression and other characteristics in Hispanic Hodgkin lymphoma patients. Hispanic Hodgkin lymphoma patients diagnosed at the Los Angeles County-University of Southern California Medical Center from 2000-2012 were included (n = 65). Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tumor tissue...

HLA dependent immune escape mechanisms in B-cell lymphomas: Implications for immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy?
Published in: OncoImmunology
Antigen presentation by tumor cells in the context of Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) is generally considered to be a prerequisite for effective immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy. We evaluated cell surface HLA class I, HLA class II and cytoplasmic HLA-DM staining by immunohistochemistry (IHC) in 389 classical Hodgkin lymphomas (cHL), 22 nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin lymphomas (NLPHL), 137 diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (DLBCL), 39 primary central nervous system lymphomas (PCNSL) and 19 testicular lymphomas. We describe a novel mechanism of immune escape in which loss of HLA-DM expression results...
Characterization of the Microenvironment of Nodular Lymphocyte Predominant Hodgkin Lymphoma
Published in: International Journal of Molecular Sciences
Nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin lymphoma (NLPHL) is characterized by a low percentage of neoplastic lymphocyte predominant (LP) cells in a background of lymphocytes. The goal of this study is to characterize the microenvironment in NLPHL. Ten NLPHL cases and seven reactive lymph nodes (RLN) were analyzed by flow cytometry for the main immune cells and multiple specific subpopulations. To discriminate between cells in or outside the tumor cell area, we used CD26. We observed significantly lower levels of CD20+ B-cells and CD56+ NK cells and higher levels of...
