Anke van den Berg
prof. dr.

I work as a clinical molecular biologist in the department of Pathology. In this function I supervise and implement advanced molecular diagnostic techniques. Within my research line, I focus on the molecular pathogenesis of B-cell Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The specific fields of interest are genomic aberrations, genetic susceptibility, and the role of small and long noncoding RNAs. I have several international collaborations and am PI and co-PI in various projects.

BCL6 alternative translocation breakpoint cluster region associated with follicular lymphoma grade 3B
Published in: Genes Chromosomes & Cancer
Translocations involving band 3q27, affecting the major breakpoint region (MBR) of BCL6, are common in diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (DLBCLs). Recent data suggest an alternative breakpoint cluster region (ABR) located between 245 and 285 kb 5′ of BCL6, which might be associated with Follicular Lymphoma (FL). Ten DLBCLs and 9 FLs grade 3B with cytogenetic rearrangements at 3q27 were studied by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to discriminate between breakpoints at the ABR and MBR. Eight DLBCLs contained a breakpoint in the MBR, and 6 FL grade 3B...

Protease activity of plasma hemopexin
Background. Previous studies into the relevance of a putative circulating factor in the pathogenesis of minimal change nephrotic syndrome have opened the possibility that plasma hemopexin might be an important effector molecule in this disorder. Thus, intra renal infusion of isolated plasma hemopexin into rats induced minimal change like glomerular lesions and proteinuria. Both, in vivo and in vitro effects of the active isoform of hemopexin could be attributed to protease activity of this molecule. However, the question remained whether hemopexin per se rather than some contaminating plasma...

TIMP-I expression in anaplastic large cell lymphoma is usually restricted to macrophages and only seldom observed in tumour cells
Published in: The Journal of Pathology
Anaplastic large cell lymphomas (ALCLs) can be subdivided into two subgroups on the basis of their expression of the ALK protein. ALK protein expression leads to activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) 3, which is more commonly expressed in ALK-positive than in ALK-negative tumours. Activated STAT3 leads to the induction of several genes such as Mcl-1, Bcl-2 and Bcl-X-L, and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1. In this study, we analysed TIMP-1 expression in five ALCL cell lines and 11 tumours by quantitative RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry....

Report: Workshop on mediastinal grey zone lymphoma
Published in: European Journal of Haematology
There are several indications that classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) and at least a proportion of cases of Primary Mediastinal B cell Lymphoma (PMBL) are derived from B cells at similar stages of differentiation and share common pathogenic mechanisms. The first indication was the existence of mediastinal grey zone lymphomas as identified in the 4th International Symposium on HL, with clinical, histological and immunohistochemical features intermediate between cHL and PMBL. Second, both tumor types resemble a cell that is developmentally situated in-between the germinal center reaction and a plasma...
