prof. dr.

I am a nuclear medicine specialist and always trying to implement innovative diagnostic and therapeutic methods in imaging. My main research interests involve infectious and inflammatory diseases, tumor-immunology, and development of new-targeted diagnostic tools for PET imaging. The latter focus is carried out in close collaboration with our radiochemists. Within the lymphoma research Groningen team we have a close collaboration with the department of hematology. The research is focused on finding new methods for diagnosis and therapy evaluation in several types of lymphomas. We have a special interest in post-transplant lymphatic disorders (PTLD). Furthermore, we are developing and evaluating several fields of radionuclide therapy, so called theranostics.

Improving the Diagnostic Performance of F-18-Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron-Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography in Prosthetic Heart Valve Endocarditis
Published in: Circulation
Background: F-18-Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron-emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) was recently introduced as a new tool for the diagnosis of prosthetic heart valve endocarditis (PVE). Previous studies reporting a modest diagnostic accuracy may have been hampered by unstandardized image acquisition and assessment, and several confounders, as well. The aim of this study was to improve the diagnostic performance of FDG PET/CT in patients in whom PVE was suspected by identifying and excluding possible confounders, using both visual and standardized quantitative assessments. Methods: In this multicenter study, 160 patients with a...

Diagnostic accuracy of bone scintigraphy in the assessment of cardiac transthyretin-related amyloidosis: a bivariate meta-analysis
Published in: European Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging
PURPOSE: Cardiac transthyretin-related amyloidosis (ATTR) is a progressive and fatal cardiomyopathy. The diagnosis of this disease is frequently delayed or missed due to the limited specificity of echocardiography. An increasing amount of data in the literature demonstrate the ability of bone scintigraphy with bone-seeking radiopharmaceuticals to detect myocardial amyloid deposits, in particular in patients with ATTR. Therefore we performed a systematic review and bivariate meta-analysis of the diagnostic accuracy of bone scintigraphy in patients with suspected cardiac ATTR. METHODS: A comprehensive computer literature search of studies published up...

Recommendations in Clinical F-Fluoro-2-Deoxy-D-Glucose PET/CT Reports: Referring Physicians’ Compliance and Diagnostic Yield
Published in: Journal of the american college of radiology
PURPOSE: To investigate how frequently and when referring physicians follow the recommendation in an 18F-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose PET/CT (FDG-PET/CT) report and to determine the diagnostic yield of these recommendations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 2,496 clinical FDG-PET/CT scans that were performed at a tertiary care academic medical center in a 1.5-year period. The following variables were extracted from each report that contained a recommendation: patient age, patient gender, hospital status (inpatient versus outpatient), indication for FDG-PET/CT scanning, descriptive clarity of the recommendation, type of recommendation (additional imaging versus...
