dr.

As a hematopathologist, I work on diagnostics of all types of hematological malignancies using a comprehensive panel of different techniques. Moreover, my main research interest involves Hodgkin lymphoma, with a strong focus on interactions between tumor cells and the microenvironment. In addition, I also have a long standing interest in genetic susceptibility. My areas of expertise are: immunology, tumor cell biology, genetic association studies and molecular diagnostics in pathology. I actively participate in international (EORTC) and national (HOVON) clinical trials.

High Human Cytomegalovirus DNAemia Early Post-Transplantation Associates With Irreversible And Progressive Loss of Renal Function
Published in: Transplant International
BACKGROUND: Transplant recipients are prone to viral infections, which could affect renal transplantation outcome. Our aim was to assess the effects of early human cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNAemia on transplant renal function. METHODS: 264 (age 50.9±13.5; male 55%) Renal transplantation recipients undergoing preemptive anti-CMV therapy were retrospectively categorized based on early (<3 months post-Tx) CMV peak viral load (PVL); PVL≤536, PVL536-6310 or PVL>6310 International Units/ml (IU/ml). Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) was analyzed between 1 and 36 months post-transplantation with Kruskal-Wallis test, linear regression and a Linear Mixed-Effects Model....

Lymphadenopathy driven by TCR-Vγ8Vδ1 T-cell expansion in FAS-related autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome
Published in: Blood
FAS-dependent apoptosis in Vδ1 T cells makes the latter possible culprits for the lymphadenopathy observed in patients with FAS mutations.Rapamycin and methylprednisolone resistance should prompt clinicians to look for Vδ1 T cell proliferation in ALPS-FAS patients.

A delicate balance between rejection and BK polyomavirus associated nephropathy; A retrospective cohort study in renal transplant recipients
Published in: PLoS ONE
BACKGROUND: The immunosuppressive agents mycophenolate acid (MPA) and tacrolimus (Tac) are associated with a higher incidence of BK polyomavirus nephropathy (BKPyVAN). In this observational retrospective cohort study, the frequency of BK polyomavirus (BKPyV) complications over a 24-month period was studied. METHODS: 358 renal transplant recipients (RTR) treated with MPA, with either cyclosporine A (CsA) (CsAM group) or Tac (TacM group) and mostly prednisolone, were included. RESULTS: Incidence of BKPyV-viremia was not significantly different between the CsAM (n = 42/191) (22.0%) and the TacM (n = 36/167) (21.6%) group....

miR-24-3p Is Overexpressed in Hodgkin Lymphoma and Protects Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg Cells from Apoptosis
Published in: The American Journal of Pathology
miRNAs play important roles in biological processes, such as proliferation, metabolism, differentiation, and apoptosis, whereas altered expression levels contribute to diseases, such as cancers. We identified miRNAs with aberrant expression in Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) and investigated their role in pathogenesis. Small RNA sequencing revealed 84 significantly differentially expressed miRNAs in HL cell lines as compared to germinal center B cells. Three up-regulated miRNAs-miR-23a-3p, miR-24-3p, and miR-27a-3p-were derived from one primary miRNA transcript. Loss-of-function analyses for these miRNAs and their seed family members resulted in decreased growth on miR-24-3p...
